Late 1880s E.J. Barnes No. 4 1/2 Treadle Screw Cutting Lathe

I have here a rare piece of Industrial Americana. This No. 4 1/2 Barnes Screw-cutting Lathe dates to an era where there were separate metal turning lathes and screw cutting lathes. Today we have engine lathes that combine screw thread cutting capability with turning and much more. There is some tooling that comes with this lathe and I have a small wooden cabinet with the spur gears used to adjust for different screw pitches. Here is a web site with pictures and information on a complete No 4 1/2 Barnes.

The drive mechanism is missing from this No. 4 1/2 size machine. You have your choice of fabricating the original treadle style drive or creating a jack-shaft or countershaft drive using a small electric motor. The jack shaft drive was an option when this lathe was new if you had a source of motive power. Or you can use this as a museum display.

This is the change gear plate for different screw pitches.

From pictures I've seen this lathe was driven from underneath with a treadle or bicycle style (Velocipede) drive.

It's got a back gear! And these are the change gears to vary the lead screw speed.
